What began as a dream to recreate the energy and spirit of the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) became a reality on Friday 12 June, when 70 students gathered after school for the inaugural Sacred Heart Fiesta.
Inspired by their experience at ACYF last December, a group of Year 10 students came together at the beginning of Term 2 with a vision: to recreate ACYF at Catholic Regional College, Caroline Springs, for our students to encounter the joy of faith in a fun, authentic and student-led way. That vision quickly grew into a team of 20 students who planned, prepared and ran the entire event.
The Sacred Heart Fiesta was alive with energy from start to finish. Live music filled the space, a Year 8 student bravely shared how Jesus has transformed their life and a Year 9 student challenged their peers to live out their faith boldly in today's world.
Students also enjoyed food and drinks, a range of interactive stalls and activities, including arts and crafts, a photo booth with the Pope, scripture origami, games, worship music, and more. More than just a fun afternoon, the Fiesta gave students an opportunity to experience the joy of celebrating their faith together.
The impact of the event was evident in the experience from those who attended.
A Year 10 student shared:
'The faith is truly alive in this room, and I can feel it and see it around me. I had been drifting away from God over the past few years, but this event makes me want to come back and pray again. I can see the joy around me.'
Another student reflected:
'I have gone to church over the years and have always been interested in going to youth group but never went. This event makes me want to go.'
The success of the Sacred Heart Fiesta is a testament to the faith, creativity and leadership of our students. Through their efforts, they created a space where young people could encounter Christ, build community and celebrate the gift of faith together 'For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them' (Mt 18:20).
We are excited for the future of Campus Ministry and look forward to seeing how God continues to work through the gifts, talents and dreams of our young people.
